Community Council to meet, Bioblitz coming up, and more.

Vashon Nature Center will celebrate its 10th-anniversary Bioblitz this year, with a count of all living things on Vashon set to take place during the 24 hours between 1 p.m. Saturday, July 9 and 1 p.m. Sunday, July 10.

This year’s Bioblitz is focused on the town and surrounding areas, including Fisher Pond. Islanders on properties within those boundaries are urged to download the iNaturalist app and survey their properties, or sign up at tinyurl.com/Bioblitz to join a surveying team. Bioblitz’s family-friendly base camp will be located at Vashon Heritage Museum, and a free public walk around Fisher Pond will take place from 7 to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 9.

Introduction to Woodworking covers basic woodworking techniques and the safe operation of power tools. Students will construct a step stool, plant stand, or similar item. Class times are 6:15 to 8:45 p.m. on Mondays or Thursdays, with one session from July 11 to Aug. 15 and another from July 14 to Aug. 18.

Intermediate Woodworking reviews basic woodworking processes and operation of power tools. Students will learn basic cabinet case and drawer construction techniques. Class times are 6:15 to 8:45 p.m. Wednesdays, July 13 to Aug. 17.

Hand Tool Woodworking will teach “old-time craftsperson” techniques and is aimed at imparting a deeper understanding of how to work with wood. Class times are 9:15 to 11:45 a.m. Saturdays, July 16 to Aug. 20.

Prime Spot for Strawberry Festival

Vashon Presbyterian Church is offering limited parking and front lawn chairs for the Strawberry Festival parade on July 16. Parking and chairs are by reservation only. There is no fee, but donations for this convenience will be accepted and forwarded to DOVE and Vashon Youth and Family Services. Reservations may be made by sending an e-mail to Bob Spangler at rwspang@centurytel.net. Please indicate how many parking spots and seats are requested.

It’s that time of year again, when islanders can purchase raffle tickets for a three-minute shopping spree at Vashon Thriftway — one of Voice of Vashon’s (VOV) biggest fundraisers of the year.

The winning raffle ticket and four $50 second prizes, will be drawn on Friday, Aug. 5 at 5:45 p.m. Tickets are $20 each or five for $80. For more information, visit voiceofvashon.org/spree.

Vashon-Maury Island Community Council’s next meeting, at 7 p.m. Monday, July 18, will be a hybrid meeting via Zoom and in-person, at Vashon Land Trust, 10014 SW Bank Road.

Monthly board meetings are open to the public, and often feature guest speakers in addition to community reports and information from local organizations.

Farm Bucks, a program of Vashon Island Growers Association’s (VIGA) Food Access Partnership, provides low-income people access to fresh produce at local VIGA-member farmstands and the Vashon Farmers Market.

The special currency is distributed by island social service agencies, and can also be picked up, with no questions asked, at the Farmer’s Market, or at the Vashon Library, or from islander Hilary Emmer, at 206-463-7277.

Independence Day on Vashon celebrated with hydro race, fireworks.

The Vashon Health Care District announced progress in its goal to build a modern primary care clinic on Vashon in a central, convenient location for all islanders.

Chief Charles Krimmert has been placed on paid administrative leave for two weeks, effective June 30 through July 14.
